Tamas Erdi

Tamas Erdi

Pianist Tamás Erdi was born in 1979 in Budapest, Hungary, and began playing the piano at age of five. He was eight when he first appeared on a concert platform.

Tamás lost his eyesight as a result of an oxygen overdose in a defective incubator and his teachers, Erika Becht and Zsuzsa Kollár, used a unique method to teach him to play the piano, whereby he virtually "recomposes" the music he is being introduced to. This process called "the structural method", has enabled him to learn many piano scores as well as 14 concertos. In 1989, Mr. Érdi was accepted by the Music Academy in Vienna into Imola Joó's class. At 15, he played a Mozart piano concerto at the prestigious Budapest Spring Festival, in the Hungarian Parliament, with Tamás Vásáry conducting and with whom he subsequently studied, winning an international piano competition in Moscow at 17.

His recordings include two orchestral CDs (Mozart), three solo piano CDs (Schubert, Chopin, and Bartók-Liszt), and a DVD entitled Tamás and Friends from Three Continents, featuring a live concert with his former American classmates and friends at the Bartók National Concert Hall of the Palace of the Arts in Budapest. On the strength of his Mozart performances Leon Fleisher offered him a scholarship at The Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. After four years with Fleisher and study in Vienna he received an artist’s diploma in piano.

In December 2010, Tamás won one of Hungary's major arts awards, the Prima Primissima prize in the category of classical music. At the award ceremony he expressed his gratitude to Canada, which he called his "second home," and in particular to The Royal Conservatory in Toronto, which gave him the opportunity to learn and to get started on his road to achievement.
